Solar generator vs gas generator
These are not competing versions of the same product. They solve different problems, and the honest answer for a lot of households is that the battery is the right first purchase and the generator is the right second one.
The decisive difference is not cost
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission attributes dozens of deaths a year to portable generator carbon monoxide poisoning, overwhelmingly from running them in enclosed or partly enclosed spaces. This is not a theoretical risk to be traded off against convenience — it is the reason the two products cannot be substituted for each other in the same location.

Where the battery genuinely wins
- Overnight outages, which is the overwhelming majority of them. Silent, safe indoors, and with pass-through charging the transition happens while you sleep.
- Medical equipment. A CPAP beside the bed cannot be run from something parked outside in the rain. See our CPAP guide.
- Apartments and terraced housing, where there is nowhere legal or safe to run a generator at all.
- Infrequent outages. A generator that sits unused for two years often will not start when you need it; stale fuel and gummed carburettors are the standard failure. A battery holds charge and needs nothing from you.
Where gas wins outright
- Multi-day outages. Fuel can be replenished; a battery without sun cannot. After about 24 hours the generator is simply the better tool.
- Heat. Resistive heating flattens any battery in under an hour. This is physics, not a limitation of a particular model.
- Well pumps, central air conditioning, workshop tools — loads above 1,800 W that no unit in this class will start.
- Cost per delivered kilowatt-hour, by a wide margin, if you are running a lot of load for a long time.
The honest recommendation
If outages where you live are short and occasional, buy the battery and stop there — it covers the actual failure mode, it is safe indoors, and it requires nothing of you between outages. If you routinely lose power for days, or you need heat or a well pump, you need a generator, and a battery alongside it is still worth having for the quiet overnight loads.
What you should not do is buy a battery expecting it to replace a generator for whole-house, multi-day backup. It will not, and no amount of capacity in this class changes that. Work out which problem you actually have using our sizing guide.

Can I run a solar generator indoors?
Yes. A battery power station has no combustion, no exhaust and no fumes, so it is safe indoors — including in a bedroom. A petrol generator produces carbon monoxide and must never be run indoors, in a garage, or near an open window, even with ventilation.
Is a solar generator cheaper than a gas generator?
Not upfront, and not per kilowatt-hour delivered. Gas is cheaper to buy for a given output and cheaper to run. The battery wins on the things that are not cost: silence, indoor safety, zero maintenance, no fuel storage, and automatic changeover.
Will a solar generator run my whole house?
No — not in the 1,000–1,200 Wh class covered here. These units run essentials: a fridge, a router, lights, phones, a CPAP. Whole-house backup including heating, air conditioning or a well pump requires a standby generator or a permanently installed home battery system.
